Dr. OKADA, Yukiko

Dr. OKADA, Yukiko, has been appointed as a commissioner of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission in June 2022.

She currently teaches at the Faculty of Science and Engineering of Tokyo City University as a visiting professor, the representative of WEN (Women's Energy Network) and is holding other positons.

Dr. OKADA also served a board member of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan. She is an academic of radiochemistry and analytical chemistry and developed a method for quantifying trace amounts of uranium and thorium in high-purity materials using neutron activation analysis, being granted her PhD (Science) from Chiba University. After the occurrence of the accident at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, she was involved in the production of radioactive standards for the Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry. She is currently currying out research as to the reason for the decrease in radioactive cesium concentration in the lake water of Akagi Onuma, Gunma Prefecture. For many years, she has been engaged in radiation education for elementary and secondary education and activities to increase the number of female researchers and engineers in science and engineering. She is also working at WEN with the aim of allowing consumers to make their own energy choices.
