| Round-Table Conference on Nuclear Power Policy |
The Monju accident of December 1995 aroused increasing concern and distrust of nuclear energy among the members of the public. It provoked numerous expressions of opinions, demands, and suggestions regarding safety at the Monju plant. Among these was one from the governors of Fukushima, Niigata, and Fukui prefectures. This was the Proposal from Three Prefectural Governors, which was presented in January 1996 to the Prime Minister and to the Director-General of the Science and Technology Agency and the Minister of International Trade and Industry (as these latter two positions were then known).
Given these circumstances, the Atomic Energy Commission determined to seek the views of all levels and sectors of society in Japan, and to incorporate their diverse opinions as part of future nuclear energy policy. The Commission therefore established the Round-Table Conferences on Nuclear Power Policy. (For details, see here.) These conferences have been held over three terms so far, and have yielded numerous suggestions for the Atomic Energy Commission.
