Basic Policy for Nuclear Energy

On July 20th 2017, "Basic Policy for Nuclear Energy" was decided by the Japan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC). This "Basic Policy" intends to act as a compass to show long-term directions for government policy on nuclear energy use in the coming years. The Cabinet further decided on July 21st 2017 that the Government of Japan respects "Basic Policy for Nuclear Energy" for research, development and utilization of nuclear science and engineering. It was decided to revise approximately every five years considering rapidly changing circumstances, and it was declared at the JAEC to start the revision in November 22nd 2021. Having accumulated discussion with and hearing from experts and stakeholders, the new Basic Policy was approved in February 20th 2023.
